Lorena Ochoa Invitational: Michelle Wie keen to end performance slump
American Michelle Wie has her reasons to be thrilled about Lorena Ochoa Invitational, as this is the event that she racked up her maiden Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) title at.
But the upcoming edition of the Lorena Ochoa Invitational 2012, scheduled for November 8-11 at Guadalajara Country Club, is going to be more crucial for her, given her current performance slump.
Despite faltering on the course and having failed to end her victory drought since she last hoisted title at the CN Canadian Women’s Open back in August 2010, Wie appears to be taking her game more seriously than ever before.
Speaking to the LPGA Tour during her pre-tournament interview in Mexico on Wednesday, Wie said that she is thrilled about coming back here and feels fully fit to win once again.
“I think coming back here I have a lot of great memories especially having such a tough year coming back here and having all those memories,” said the golfing sensation who rose to fame on the back of her looks rather than her game.
“Getting the opportunity to come here, thanks Lorena for having me here. Hopefully I can start things up again. I´m starting from scratch this year so great timing for this week”.
Wie went on to say that she likes Guadalajara in every sense. “The weather is perfect the guacamole still tastes really good and the people and maybe different this year I see more and more people coming out and to see the golf course in great shape”.
It remains to be seen how the American star is going to fare against rivals, who also boast comparable and even better profiles.
The upcoming edition of the four-round tournament is not only featuring past winners like Scottish Catriona Matthew and I.K. Kim of South Korea, but almost all the top-ranked contenders are confirmed to grace the event.
Wie is one of the most glamorous and famed players on the LPGA Tour. And yet the lack of success on the course appears to be stalling her campaign to end her winning drought.
With observers saying that a long and bruising slump is proving more harmful than commonly realised by Wie’s fans and critics, the LPGA star has repeatedly vowed to pay more attention to her game.
