Lorena Ochoa Invitational: So Yeon Ryu clings to fourth position in second round
South Korean So Yeon Ryu was more than happy in the second round of Lorena Ochoa Invitational as she stood tied for the fourth position despite posting a 70.
Ryu, who made a solid start at the four-day Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) tournament, fired a 67 in the opening round on Thursday, but settled for the fourth position.
However, a 70 in the second round did not make a dent in her overall position as some of the first-round gainers failed to score well, giving players like Ryu a chance to boost their positions
on the leaderboard.
Ryu started the round on Friday at Guadalajara Country Club, Mexico, with an aim to cement her position. She parred the first five holes and launched a birdie on the difficult par-3 6th.
After parring the 7th and 8th hole, the South Korean star drained her second birdie on the 9th.
On the back nine, her performance looked a bit rickety as she carded two bogeys on the 17th and 18th. However, she fully capitalised on her short game and made birdie-putts
on the 11th and 15th hole.
Commentators said that Ryu’s performance was amazing in the opening round, as she posted a bogey-free score, with five birdies.
Commentators further said that the third round will be more difficult as the top positions have seen a sudden change after first-round leaders, excluding American Angela Stanford, tumbled
to lower positions.
American Michelle Wie, who was thrilled about making a good start in the first round as she fired a 66 to share a lead, slipped to the 12th position after she carded a 75.
Speaking to the media at the end of the first round on Friday, Wie said that her game was perfect in every sense as she made the most of her renewed confidence and good putting skills.
She said that her short game was good enough to keep her in contention, but the fairways were also suitable for her.
“Just had a couple of good holes. You have to be on the right position on the fairway, on the right position on the green, get above the hole a couple times and getting in your putts,” Wie
said.
