Lorena Ochoa to play in her own event
The Lorena Ochoa Invitational is scheduled to start today in Guadalajara, Mexico. This event is the second last tournament of the 2010 LPGA season and is being staged at the Guadalajara Club. Six months after retiring from the circuit, this would be the
first time Ochoa will play competitive golf. With this event taking place in Mexico, Ochoa has surely gotten the Mexicans excited.
The host of the tournament gave an indication two weeks ago in China that she will make an appearance in Mexico. This was when Ochoa won the $US 1.28 million with a win at the Mission Hills Star Trophy celebrity pro-am. Even though that field is no match
to the talented field Ochoa will face this weekend, there is no saying as to how she’ll do. Another special something about this tournament is the fact that Ochoa’s caddie will be none other than her own husband. Aeromexcio’s CEO, Andres Conesa will accompany
Ochoa on the course this weekend. It will be a good experience for both of us, and I feel it’s very important for us to share this week inside the ropes,” Ochoa said. “We will enjoy it, and if we make a few mistakes, we will laugh about it together and hopefully
go make a lot of birdies together.”
Lorena made it clear that she doesn’t have plans of returning to the game full time and this isn’t really a ‘comeback.’ Now happily married, the player retired merely to give more time to her husband and family.
The Lorena Ochoa Invitational is being played for the third year. The first time it took place in November 2008 at the course where Lorena was taught the sport. Since she learned golf here, it is a place that is very special to her. The Lorena Ochoa Invitational
by Benamex and Corona Light is a restricted field tournament and is only made up of thirty six golfers. The top five golfers in the Rolex Women’s World Rankings will play along with the top 26 players on the LPGA money list. The remaining five golfers are
invited due to sponsor exemptions
In 2008, the American Angela Stanford took the title with a 13-under 275 whereas the winner in 2009 was Michele Wie, who posted the same score. This was Michelle Wie’s first victory on the LPGA circuit and she will try her best to defend her title. Last
year, Wie finally ended her winless streak after years of controversy and injury. The birdies Wie posted that last year were a powerful response to all the drama the star had to face. Shooting a 69 in the final round, she finally made a mark after being in
the spotlight for so long. Last year, Michelle beat Paul Creamer by two strokes.
This year out of the leading ten in the Rankings, only Ji Yai Shin won’t be playing. Winning the Mizuno Classic last weekend, Shin decided to take a break and return to play in the finale of the LPGA circuit. The player wants to rest up and be in perfect
shape for the big event. The Tour Championship will take place after three weeks in Florida and it finally brings this season to a close. Last weekend, Jiyai carded a 5-under-67 in the final round to ensure her second LPGA victory of the season. Currently,
Shin is ranked number one in the LPGA rankings.
The other nine players that will be competing in the event are Yani Tseng, Song Hee Kim, Na Yeon Choi, Michelle Wie, Suzann Pettersen, Ai Miyazato, Cristie Kerr, Paula Creamer and In Kyung Kim. Katherine Hull and Karrie Web will be representing Australia.
The first two titles have been taken by American golfers; there is no saying in who will be the winner this time. With the hostess herself taking part, The Lorena Ochoa Invitational will be an exciting one to follow.
