Lorenzo Cain homers twice as Kansas City Royals upset Chicago White Sox 7-5 – MLB Update
Kansas City Royals upset the Chicago White Sox 7-5 at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago, Illinois on Friday, September 7 in the opening game of their three match series.
Royals’ starting pitcher Luis Mendoza had a very difficult time on the mound as he gave up 10 hits and five runs in just over five innings. Relief pitchers Tim Collins, Aaron Crow and Kelvin Herrera combined to pitch three scoreless inning to bring Royals
back into the contest. Closer Greg Holland gave up just a hit in the ninth to help Royals secure a narrow 7-5 win.
After Chicago took the early 1-0 lead, Salvador Perez homered to left in the second inning to put Royals on the board. Centre fielder Lorenzo Cain made the most of scoring opportunities as he connected for a two run home-run in the fifth inning to put Kansas
City 3-2 ahead.
Jeff Francoeur, Eric Hosmer made valuable contributions in the sixth and Cain hit the tie breaking home-run in the bottom of the ninth.
"They've always had a really good bullpen and they've always been able to swing the bats. Of late, they've been really good pitching, starting-wise, so they're just as formidable as anybody," said Chicago's Paul Konerko. "We realize that, and we certainly
don't go into games taking them lightly.”
"(Liriano) was eating me alive with the changeup," Cain said. "I couldn't touch it, I couldn't see it, I couldn't do anything with it, but he ended up hanging a slider right down the middle of the plate, put a good swing on it and I was able to get it out."
It was an extremely important game for the White Sox, who had an excellent chance to move two games ahead of Detroit Tigers on the American League Central Division standings table but the Royals played out of their skins to inflict a heavy blow on their
opponents on Friday evening.
Manager Ned Yost will be proud of the fighting skills his team showed against the AL Central leaders and it will be interesting to see if the Royals can take the momentum in Game 2 to take a decisive 2-0 series lead.
