Lorgat regrets Eden Gardens exclusion
International Cricket Council (ICC) Chief Executive http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Haroon-Lorgat-c61719 regretted that Eden Gardens has lost the World Cup match between England and India scheduled to be held on 27 February.
In an email to Cricket Association of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jagmohan-Dalmiya-c65287, Lorgat said: “I am equally disappointed that the Eden Gardens couldn’t host the match. But believe me, it was not in my power to change the technical committee’s decision. I intend
to meet you soon to clear up the misunderstanding.”
After examination, the venue inspection team submitted its report to the ICC last week about the readiness of five venues for the World Cup matches. The ICC chief, after assessment of report, asked Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to select an
alternative for approval from the cricket’s world governing body.
“All venues had sufficient time to prepare for World Cup matches. We had been understanding and had provided extensions to the deadline dates but unfortunately we are now at a point where we must carefully manage our risks,” said Lorgat.
The Kolkata Eden Gardens authorities were shocked by this decision and assured last Friday that they would complete finishing work at the venue within deadline to ensure holding http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750-England match. Tournament director and chief administrative officer of
the BCCI, Ratnakar Shetty, had written a letter to ICC requesting it to reconsider its decision. The media reports also revealed that the BCCI had taken this step on Jagmohan’s request.
Further, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 Cricket Board former president, Thilanga Sumathipala, also suggested the ICC to reassess its decision of excluding Eden Gardens. Talking to the media Monday, Sumathipala said every Indian should strive to retain the venue. “There is so
much life, so much of history that the ICC cannot just walk away with this,” he said.
According to Lorgat, the ICC had no option except canceling the fixture.
Eden Gardens was not only assigned India-England match, it was also to host three other matches including http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kenya-c752 (March 20).
