Lorie Kane fires 68 in first round at Omega Dubai Ladies Masters
Lorie Kane of Canada posted a 68 in the opening round of Omega Dubai Ladies Masters 2012, grabbing a share of the second position on the leaderboard.
When Kane started the four-day LET (Ladies European Tour) tournament on Wednesday morning, only a few of her rivals were convinced that she would be able to pull off a big show.
However, Kane started the first round with confidence and launched a birdie on the first hole.
The Canadian star then parred the next hole and fired her second birdie on the par-5 third hole. Kane parred the remaining holes on the front nine to bring her score to a 33.
On the back nine, Kane ramped up pressure on rivals, boosting her score on the leaderboard. She drained a birdie on the par-5 10th hole, but failed to stand her ground on the next hole as she missed a parr-putt to record her first bogey of the round.
She once again impressed the spectators after she shot another birdie, but a bogey on the difficult par-3 15th seemed to dent her confidence.
Kane was quick to regain her confidence as she launched another two birdies on the 16th and 18th hole.
Klara Spilkova of Czech Republic stunned her fans and rivals in the round as she posted a 67 to stay at the top of the leaderboard.
Klara is not being regarded as a strong contender for the LET tournament, but a fiery start to her campaign has grabbed the spectators’ attention and she is expected to keep the momentum going in the next three rounds as well.
Most of the favourite contenders were seen struggling to score in the first round, but young guns have performed much better.
Spanish Carlota Ciganda and Caroline Masson of Germany rank as the hot favourites, as both the stars are battling for the 2012 money title.
Ciganda is the current leader in the ISPS Handa Order of Merit, with Masson trailing her.
The Spanish star is happy with her performance in the 2012 season, as she has grabbed one title.
“It's been a very good year. It's easy to travel, living with my family, because I studied in the States so it's nice to be back home again, and I really like it playing in Europe”.
