Lorna Tonks impresses in Women’s 50m breaststroke heats – EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships
Lorna Tonks of Redcliffe League impressed the aquatic crowd by dominating the preliminary rounds of Women’s 50m breaststroke on day seven of the 2012 EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships at the South Australia Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Adelaide on
Wednesday, March 21.
The 23-year-old Tonks faced tough competition from her following swimmer, Sarah Katsoulis of Nunawading in the single lap breaststroke discipline but with her impeccable efforts, she paved her way to the finishing end for first position.
Tonks posted an effort of 31.85 seconds to conquer top qualification spot of the discipline. She remained 2.05 seconds slower from the world mark of 29.80 seconds, made by Jessica Hardy of USA at the 2009 Rome World Championships.
Her impressive effort placed her in a lead of 0.03 seconds over Katsoulis, who covered the equivalent distance by producing a time of 31.88 seconds. The 27-year-old Katsoulis was followed by Leiston Pickett of Southport Olympic Swimming Club, who was 0.13
seconds behind and hit the finishing end with the timing of 32.01 seconds for third position.
The fourth finest spot of the discipline was secured by Samantha Marshall of Melbourne, who stayed almost two strokes slower from her preceding swimmer and surfaced on the finishing end with the timing of 32.32 seconds. She was followed by Tessa Wallace
of Pelican Waters, who claimed fifth qualification spot of the event by touching the wall in a time of 32.47 seconds.
Moments later, the crowd witnessed forceful efforts of Linley Frame of Melbourne, who stayed 0.20 seconds behind her preceding swimmer and tapped the finishing wall with the timing of 32.67 seconds.
The 40-year-old Frame was chased by Libby Forbes of Nunawading, who stayed 0.16 seconds slower from her former swimmer and emerged on the finishing end with an effort of 32.83 seconds. She was chased by 18-year-old Kate Sommerfield of Warragul, who was just
0.01 seconds slower from Forbes and appeared on the finishing blockade with the timing of 32.84 seconds.
The session came to an end after the conclusion of all listed events while Tonks expressed contentment over her fabulous achievement and articulated her desired of continuing the same in semi-final.
