Lorna Tonks pockets Women’s 50m breaststroke gold: Day three - Oceania Swimming Championships
Lorna Tonks of Australia pocketed gold medal of the Women’s 50m breaststroke on day three of the 2012 Oceania Swimming Championships in Noumea, New Caledonia on Thursday, May 31.
Tonks, who qualified into the playoff as top fastest swimmer, made a significant improvement in her timing and overpowered her opponents for gold medal of the discipline.
With her invincible efforts, she remained prominently ahead of her opponents and cruised her way towards the finishing wall for gold medal by clocking a time of 31.66 seconds.
The gold medallist was followed by her team-member, Jessica Hansen, who also secured her qualification spot of the discipline and ended her swim in second best place by posting a time of 33.13 seconds.
Hansen was chased by Pilar Shimizu of Guam, who remained 1.32 seconds slower and completed the podium by winning bronze medal of the discipline with an effort of 34.45 seconds.
The bronze medallist was followed by Aja Grande of Hawaii, who was nearly 0.70 seconds slower and emerged on the finishing end for fourth position by submitting a time of 35.14 seconds.
Fifth finest spot of the discipline was obtained by Maroma Bong of France, who elevated her efforts in the playoff and occupied fifth finishing spot of the discipline by producing a time of 35.60 seconds.
Bong was chased by her teammate, Lauriane Santa, who suffered a loss of 0.06 seconds and settled on the finishing end by submitting a time of 35.66 seconds.
Seventh position of the discipline was obtained by Lena Hayakawa of Hawaii, who was only 0.04 seconds away from her preceding swimmer and touched the finishing wall with the timing of 35.70 seconds.
Subsequently, Hayakawa remained 1.12 seconds faster from Matelita Buadromo of Fiji Islands, who failed to improve her position and clocked a timing of 36.82 seconds for eighth position.
The arena appreciated commendable efforts of all participants in the 50m discipline while the position holders received awards and accolades for their notable effort after the session. Furthermore, the championship will end on June 1 after the completion
of all planned events in Men and Women’s corner.
