Los Angeles Angels: Regular season results – MLB August 2011
After giving impressive results in July 2011 to improve their win-loss record to 59-50, Los Angeles Angels were hoping to consolidate their position in the Wild Card standing with similar sort of performances in the month of August 2011 as well. Cruising
to a 5-1 victory in game one of the three match series against Minnesota Twins, the Angels looked in supreme form.
Ervin Santana achieved a remarkable feat as he became the first pitcher in the Majors to follow a no hitter with complete game victory since Tommy Greene did it with Philadelphia Phillies back in 1991.
"I feel happy about it, but it's part of the job," Santana said. "I've been working hard, and that's how I get the results. It's not easy. You just go out there and compete, and whatever happens, happens. Every time I got behind in the count, they didn't
make the adjustment. And that was the great thing because they were swinging. They've very aggressive."
Although the Angels were unable to play their A-game in game two, they displayed some high quality baseball in the third and final game to clinch an impressive series victory. Rookie Mark Trumbo hit a wonderful home-run and he had four RBIs to lift his side
to an incredible 7-1 win.
In their next series against the Seattle Mariners, the Angels made a brilliant start as they prevailed 1-0 in a low scoring opening game. Although they paid the heavy price for their large number of unforced errors in the second game, they ended the series
on a positive note as they outplayed the Mariners 2-1 in the final game to clinch their second series victory of the month. The win also improved their win-loss record to 63-52.
Despite making a strong 6-4 start to their next three match series against New York Yankees, the Angels were unable to handle the pressure in the second and third games to let the opposition team clinch a 2-1 series victory.
The Angels struggled to find their form in the series against Toronto Blue Jays as they lost second consecutive series in the month. Ervin Santana won his fifth straight start to lift the Angels to a 5-1 win the opening encounter against the Blue Jays.
"That's a deep offensive lineup," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "They've got power all the way through the lineup and he kept them in check. Just a great game from Ervin."
However, they were unable to maintain their good form in the following two games to suffer their second series loss of the month. The Angels ended the season in a positive fashion to become the leading AL West team in the Majors.
