Los Angeles Angels: Regular season results – MLB May 2011
After achieving an impressive 15-12 win-loss record in the first month of regular season, the Angels were looking to top the Wild Card standings with consistent performances in the month of May 2011 as well. Edging past Tampa Bay Rays in their first game
of the month, they secured a deserving 2-1 series victory over their arch rivals.
Hank Conger displayed some high quality hitting skills as he hit a home-run to lift the Angels to a 6-5 win in a closely contested encounter.
"If this was the seventh game of the World Series, I think you'd see him out there trying to pitch," Angels’ manager, Scioscia said. "He had some IVs put in, and I think one more day of getting fluids in him and he should be good to go."
In their next four match series against Boston Red Sox, Scioscia and his men showed great determination, temperament and fighting abilities. The Red Sox were absolutely brilliant early on in the series as they scored comfortable wins in the opening two games
to take a 2-0 lead. However, the Angels stayed focused and they bounced back brilliantly with a superb 5-3 victory in the third game.
"It was a game where there could have been some letdown," Angels’ manager Mike Scioscia said, "but the guys hung in there and came out in the end."
The AL West team completely dominated their rivals in the fourth and final game as they secured a stunning 11-0 to end the series on a positive note. Defeating a team of Boston’s calibre in two successive games, the Angels were feeling confident about their
game play and the team management aimed to give similar results throughout the month. Levelling the four match series in great style, the Angels also improved their win-loss record to 18-14.
The Angels made a terrific start to their next three match series against Cleveland Indians, clinching the opening encounter 2-1. Although they lost their way a bit in the second game, they ended the series strong with a thrilling 6-5 win. However, following
that series win over the Indians, the Angels failed to live up to the expectations and they suffered four straight series losses, which damaged their regular season record quite significantly.
Regrouping themselves, the Angels managed to end the month positively as they secured victories over Atlanta Braves, Oakland Athletics and Minnesota Twins. Overall, the month of May 2011 proved to be quite a decent one for the Angels, registering a reasonable
20-28 win-loss record.
It looked as if the Angels were beginning to surge and their performances during the month against some of the top tier teams was superb.
