Los Angeles Angels beat New York Yankees 3-2 – MLB Update
An electrifying series-opener between Los Angeles Angels and New York Yankees at the Angel Stadium on Friday, June 3 resulted in favour of the Angels 3-2 after they put in an inspiring performance with both bat and ball.
The Angels’ Bobby Abreu led the game off with a RBI single off the Yankees’ starter Ivan Nova in the first inning. Alberto Callaspo added a second RBI single to post a 2-0 lead to put the Yankees under pressure. However, the Yankees’ Russell Martin reduced
the burden by one run with an RBI single in the top of the second inning.
Nova then did not allow any run until the fourth inning and by this time Jorge Posada hit a grounder to deep right-field to tie it at 2-all. However, the Angels’ Peter Bourjos blistered a shot to left-field for a lead producing run in the bottom of the inning.
After this hit, both starters did not yield any runs as Nova continued his spell until the sixth while Jered Weaver threw seven innings. Weaver yielded just three hits, struck-out eight batters and despite allowing four walks achieved his seventh win of
the season.
It was really a matter of happiness for Weaver as he achieved this win against one of the strongest batting line-ups in Major League Baseball.
"I didn't face the Yankees last year, so I was really amped up for this one -- too amped up, as it turned out," Weaver said. "I have to be more careful not to let my emotions get the best of me. You want to come out and use your best pitches against the
leadoff batter. But Jeter is a great player, and he kept fighting them off. At least we were able to get him out after all that."
The 28-year-old right-hand pitcher acquired his second win in the last seven games after winning six consecutive games in 2011.
On the other hand, the Yankees’ rookie hurler Nova, after allowing three runs on eight hits, walking two and making two strike-outs suffered his fourth loss this season. The 24-year-old lost his second consecutive game after getting two-straight wins, one
each against Tampa Bay Rays and New York Mets on May 17 and 22 respectively.
Relievers’ David Robertson, Boone Logan and closer Luis Ayala remained scoreless over their small spells, while Angles’ Scott Downs and Jordan Walden did not yield any runs over their one inning spells.
