Los Angeles Angels defeat Baltimore Orioles 7-1 – MLB Update
The Los Angeles Angels swept away the Baltimore Orioles taking third straight win with a 7-1 victory in the rubber game of the three-game series at Angel Stadium of Anaheim on Sunday, August 21.
The Angels had already won the first two games in a dominating manner. They snatched the series opener with 8-3 while grabbed the second game 9-8 after a close confrontation.
Angels’ starter Jerome Williams, playing his second game for Los Angeles, had some impressive pitching and held the Orioles struggling over his seven innings. He allowed only one run, in the top of the seventh inning, when the Angels' batting already written
a seven-run lead. Orioles’ first baseman Matt Wieters picked his fastball and launched it for one-run homer to right-field.
"I feel like crying," Williams said. "It's been a long road. I am just speechless. There was so much emotion out there. Being away from the game for a long time, I dedicated this to my mother and my family."
Williams punched out six batters and allowed six hits over 107 innings long spell to get his first win of the career. It was the first victory for Williamson since September 25, 2005, when he defeated the Houston Astros 3-2 with his seven strong innings.
"Everything was working," Williams said. "I was pounding the strike zone, and that's what I do. I got some ground balls and some strikeouts and let my defence play. I'm just trying to do everything I can to help this team win and get to the playoffs."
Booby Wilson led the game off with his line drive double to left-centre for one run in the bottom of the second inning. Peter Bourjos followed with an RBI single to take it to 2-0 in this inning. Then in the third inning, Vernon Wells scored on a throwing
error by the Orioles’ catcher Craig Tatum. Mark Izturis started the fourth with an RBI single and Peter Bourjos ended with a blistering hit to left for two-run homer.
The Angels were leading 6-0 until the fifth inning and then Hanley Kendrick launched 425-feet long one-run homer to entertain the packed stadium under sunny 77 degrees day.
Orioles’ starter Brian Matusz worked four innings, gave six run on nine hits, and walked one for his sixth loss of the season. Brad Bergesen gave one run on three innings and Willie Eyre did not yield any run in the last inning.
The Angels are now leading the nine game series 5-1 and their form is enough to destroy the Orioles in the last series of the season, starting from September 16 at Oriole Park in Camden Yards, Baltimore. The Orioles are struggling to get their momentum back.
