Los Angeles Angels defeat Cleveland Indians 2-1 in series finale – MLB Update
The American Leagues’ Los Angeles Angels beat the Cleveland Indians 3-1 in the final game at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio on Wednesday, July 27.
Angels’ starter Ervin Santana worked a no-hitter nine innings to break the Angels’ previously settled record in 1984. The 28-year-old Santana struck-out ten batters and allowed one run one walk to record his sixth win of the season. He now has 6-8 record
with 3.47 ERA in 22 starts this season.
Santana received numerous words of praise not only from his manager Mike Scioscia but also from the Indians’ manager Manny Acta.
Acta said, "He was good, really good. We have see guys throw harder, with good breaking balls, too. A lot of times in no-hitters, you have to have good stuff. That does not mean necessarily best stuff. He was terrific today."
After he allowed a run on walk in the first inning, he held the Indians under uncontrollable pressure and helped his club take their 57th win of the season.
Angels’ batting line-up remained silent in the first four innings, but in the fifth inning, they awakened and tied the game 1-all. Left-fielder Mike Trout made a sacrifice fly to right-field, allowing Peter Bourjos to score a lead off run. Torii Hunter scored
a leading run on the Indians’ catcher Carlos Santana’s passed the ball in the sixth inning.
Angels’ catcher Bobby Wilson explained Santana’s game. "Santana didn't take a pitch off. It's the most fun I've ever had on the baseball field, I'll tell you that much," he further added."He shook me off a couple times and that is OK."
Peter Bourjos singled to centre-field, scoring Henley Kendrick in the ninth inning to cement the Angels’ road win in front of a large crowd. Now the Angels have won 29 games away from home.
Indians’ starter David Huff allowed two runs on five hits and struck-out four batters in just over five innings. He lost his first game in two starts that he made after returning from disabled list. His record now has moved to 1-1 with 0.71 ERA in two starts.
Joe Smith worked one inning and struck-out two batters over 16 pitches. Vinnie Pestano did not allow any run over one inning and Chris Perez gave away single in the last inning.
The Angels put in a brilliant performance as they managed to restrict the Indians’ offence from scoring. Cleveland will be looking to improve their game play and become more competitive in their next match-up. It will be interesting to see how the Angels
carry their confidence into their next game of the 2011 MLB regular season.
