Los Angeles Angels defeat Detroit Tigers 12-7 in series-opener – MLB Update
Los Angeles Angels continued their winning momentum in a four-game series-opener against the Detroit Tigers to record their 12-7 triumph at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Thursday, July 28.
Mark Trumbo launched a 353-feet long two-run homer off the Tigers’ starter Brad Penny to provide his club 2-0 early lead up the middle of the second inning. Jeff Mathis followed him with his single to left-field to secure a 3-0 lead in the same inning.
Tigers’ Miguel Cabrera hammered off the Angels’ starter Joel Pineiro to reduce the lead by one in the bottom of the second inning. Brennan Boesch singled to left-centre, allowing Don Kelly to cut it to 3-2 in the top of the third inning.
However, the Angels started their real form with the bat in the top of the fourth inning, when Trumbo tripled to deep-centre to start a four-run inning. Peter Bourjos added an RBI single, Erick Aybar contributed single and Torii Hunter touched for the fourth
run to create a 7-2 lead.
Tigers were not ready to denote the game so easily, as Jhonny Peralta scored an RBI single, Andy Dirks scored a double and Brennan Boesch made his second single of the game to reduce the lead to 7-6 in the bottom of the fourth inning.
However, after two scoreless innings, the Angels came out again and launched some brilliant hitting to cement a 12-6 lead until the end of the seventh inning. Howard Kendrick scored a double while Trumbo and Aybar each scored an RBI single.
Trumbo was on his best with streaking hitting and said, "Power and production are what I need to do. That's what first basemen are known for."
He further added. "I had an idea what I needed, because I'm usually aware of what I've done in the game. It was in the back of my mind, and if it happened, great, but I had already produced in the game."
Tigers’ Wilson Betemit hammered a 414-feet long one-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Pineiro allowed six runs on seven hits in just over three innings, Horacio Ramirez gave just two hits and Bobby Cassevah tossed a perfect two innings in the crucial time to get his first win of the season.
"What Bobby did kept us in the game," Angels’ manager Mike Scioscia said. "That was just a big outing, and hopefully, he'll keep contributing like that, because he has a big arm."
Fernando Rodney and Jordan Walden each remained scoreless while Scott Downs yielded one run on two hits over one inning.
Tigers’ starter Penny on the other hand gave seven runs on nine hits and walked one batter without taking any hitter over three innings to receive his eighth loss of the season. David Purcey gave three runs and Phil Coke allowed two runs. Relievers, Charlie
Furbush, Chance Ruffin and closer Joaquin Benoit did not allow any run over their short spells.
