Los Angeles Angels defeat Florida Marlins 2-1 – MLB Update
After posting a 7-3 win over the Mets yesterday to take the series 2-1, the Los Angeles Angels expressed the same kind of form against the Florida Marlins to overpower them 2-1 in the first outing of the three-game interleague series, at Sun Life Stadium
in Miami, on Monday, June 20.
In the first, game the clubs’ played since 2005 when the Angels took two-of-three, the Halos’ starter Jered Weaver allowed an early RBI single in the bottom of the second inning. However, he made a strong come-back and took out six batters allowing only
one walk over seven innings.
The right-hand pitcher, who had tossed the second shut-out of the season in his last start against the Seattle Mariners on June 14, earned his ninth win of the season and managed to reduce his ERA from 2.06 to 2.01 ERA after sixteen starts. He is leading
the American League with 1.89 ERA and holds the overall second position in the Majors this season.
"It was a good pitcher's duel, and luckily we were able to come out on top," Weaver said.
His reliever, Scott Downs and closer Jordan Walden both carried his momentum and each tossed one scoreless inning. Downs managed to hold his 11th game while Walden saved his 17th game of the season.
The Angels were trailing by one run until the start of the sixth inning but Torii Hunter drove in a line drive single against the Marlins’ scoreless starter Anibal Sanchez, who otherwise was having a dazzling pitching performance.
After allowing this run, Sanchez gained back his momentum and tossed a perfect seventh inning to complete his game. In his seven innings spell, Sanchez took out eight batters and allowed only one run on eight hits but remained winless due to some wobbly
pitches of his reliever Steve Cishek.
The game was tied 1-all when Cishek replaced Sanchez but he allowed Torii Hunter his and the club’s second RBI single. The Angels’ closer tossed a perfect ninth inning to take his club to their 36th win of the season and first in the interleague
games.
Marlins are still looking to nip their losing streak, which now has reached to 11 games. The club now has lost 19 of their last 20 games. They won their last game against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday, June 10. This win was also after eight consecutive
defeats.
Now the Marlins have called their interim manager Jack McKeon, who joined the team after Edwin Rodriguez resigned on Sunday after the club's extremely poor performance. Acoording to experts, it would take Mackoen some time to get mixed up with the bull-pen
and until then Florida might have to bear some more blows.
