Los Angeles Angels defeat New York Mets 4-3 – MLB Update
After losing the rubber game against the Seattle Mariners, the Los Angeles Angels regained their momentum and defeated the New York Mets 4-3 in the first outing of the three-game series at Citi Field, New York on Friday, June 17.
The Angels scored an RBI each in the second, third and then in the sixth and seventh inning while the Mets fought hard and posted one run each in the second, third and eighth inning. The score was 4-3 after the end of the eighth inning and the Mets might
take the game into their side but the Angels’ closer Jordan Walden made an outstanding ninth inning to rule out that option.
At the top of the second inning, the Angels’ centre-fielder Peter Bourjos earned an RBI single on a throwing error by third baseman Justin Turner to take a 1-0 lead. However, the Mets’ centre-fielder Angel Pagan tied the game with an RBI single against the
Angels’ starter Joel Pineiro.
Once again, the Angels took a lead in the top of the third inning when Vernon Wells drove in a single off the Mets’ starter Chris Capuano. Pagan came into action to tie the game at two-all with an RBI single. His singles provided the Mets a chance to make
a come-back in the game, as he was aware of the fast pitches of Pineiro.
"We all know Pineiro," Pagan said. "He's been around for a long time, and he knows how to make adjustments."
The score was two-all at the end of the third inning and then both starters made some strong pitches. In the top of the sixth inning though, Capuano pitched loose and allowed an RBI single to Bourjos.
Following this, Torii Hunter added a fourth run with the help of a line drive single to right-field. This run gave the Angels a 4-2 lead that their starter Pineiro defended successfully.
Pineiro tossed a perfect sixth inning and got Justin Turner on a ground out in the start of the seventh inning before handing over the responsibility to reliever Hisanori Takahashi, who threw eight scoreless pitches to complete the seventh inning.
In the eighth inning, the Mets’ catcher Ronny Paulino blistered a hard hit to add one run that reduced the lead to 4-3. However, the Angels’ closer Walden threw strong pitches to earn his club their 34th win of the season.
