Los Angeles Angels defeat Seattle Mariners 4-3 – MLB Update
The American League’s Los Angeles Angels played a tremendous game to overpower the Seattle Mariners 4-3 for the second-straight triumph in the four-game series at Angel Stadium in Anaheim on Friday, July 8.
In the second game of the series, the Angels blistered a homer each in the first, fourth, seventh and ninth inning, to keep their position strong throughout the outing. Erick Aybar led the game off with his 361-feet long one-run homer off the Mariners’ starter
Blake Beavan in the bottom of the first inning. In the same inning their second baseman, Howie Kendrick touched a single to extend his hitting streak to 17 games.
Then, after the Mariners took a 2-1 advantage with an RBI single each by Ichiro Suzuki and Justin Smoak, Vernon Wells hammered a 364-feet game-tier one-run home-run. In the fifth, the Mariners’ Brandon Ryan scored an RBI single and took his team to a 3-2
leading position that the Mariners kept until the bottom of the seventh inning.
In this inning, the Angels’ catcher, Hank Conger launched a 387-feet long one-run homer to tie the game at 3-all in the bottom of the seventh inning. The game remained scoreless in the eighth inning and in the top of the ninth inning as it obviously went
to extra just before a dazzling shot by Mark Trumbo. He smashed a 418-feet long walk off homer to bring smiles back to his team.
With this win, the Angels now have improved to 48 wins this season.
"We've got some young guys on our club who we're counting on to piece together a puzzle on what we believe is a championship-caliber club," manager Mike Scioscia said.
Their ace Ervin Santana, pitched tremendously but he allowed three runs, one each in the third, fourth and fifth inning. The 28-year-old right-hand hurler struck-out six batters and allowed one walk over seven innings.
Reliever Scott Downs and closer Jordon Walden also threw unplayable pitches and managed to escape their one innings spell.
Beaven tossed just over six innings, allowed two runs on six hits, walked none and struck-out two batters. Jamey Wright and David Pauley each permitted one run on one hit while Aaron Laffey did not give any run.
The Angels managed to hold on and take this much needed victory over the Mariners. Los Angeles gave a debut cap to 19-year-old Mike Trout, who played at centre-field.
