Los Angeles showed great determination, fighting spirit and mental toughness as they edged past the Chicago Cubs 4-3 at Angel Stadium of Anaheim in Anaheim, California on Tuesday, June 4 in the opening game of their two match series of the 2013 Major League
Baseball regular season.
With their win, the Angels took an impassable 1-0 series lead and it will be interesting to see if they can continue the good work to wrap up a much needed series sweep in the American League. Despite having some of the best hitting and pitching talent,
the Angels have not been able to live up to the expectations. Surely, they will be looking to learn from their mistakes to improve their win-loss record to have any chance of making it to the playoffs.
“I knew it was out of the park as soon as I hit it,” Albert Pujols said in a post game interview with a reporter. “It just felt good because it gave us the lead. Even though Weaver didn't get the win, he pitched very well and gave us a chance to score some
runs and come out with a win.”
“He wasn't supposed to even come close to throwing that pitch in that situation,” Cubs manager Dale Sveum said with a tinge of disgust. “Somewhere down the line, we lost the scouting report from the bullpen to the mound.”
Cubs, on the other hand, will be disappointed with the outcome of the contest. Despite putting up a solid fight, the Cubs were unable to find winning ways. It will be exciting to see if the Cubs can bounce back in the finale to avoid another embarrassing
series sweep.
Angels’ starting pitcher Jered Weaver had a decent time on the mound as he allowed just six hits and three runs in six solid innings to set up an easy win for his team. Weaver struck out batters at crucial moments to keep the Cubs under pressure. Relief
pitcher Robert Coello showed nerves of steel under pressure as he pitched a scoreless eighth inning for his second win of the year.
