Los Angeles Angels get another big name, sign C.J. Wilson to five-year, $77.5 million -MLB Update
The Los Angeles Angels did not stop their shopping spree with Albert Pujols as they signed him to a huge 10-year deal worth a whopping $250 million to $260 million, but kept on going and also acquired free agent pitcher, C.J. Wilson, for a cool five-years
at a $77.5 million price tag.
Thinking of the Wilson and Angels deal as something out of the blue would be unfair and injustice to the well thought out planning of the Angels.
“I’d like to tell you that was a focus at all, but truly, our thought was, C.J. Wilson has been one of the premier starting pitchers in the American League over the last few years,” new Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto said. “However that affects other
teams is just how it affects other teams. I can’t say that that was a primary focus.”
Wilson on the other hand, had also been reported to be getting offers from the Miami Marlins in the six-year range and possibly even more money, but seeing how Albert Pujols was also going to Los Angeles, it only seemed natural to become part of a team that
could be the World Champions next season.
Miami Marlins were certainly disappointed on losing out of Wilson as well after they lost out on Albert Pujols even though they were termed to be one of the frontrunners in the race to acquire the superstar hitter.
Which could be seen by the following statement,
"Some thought the Marlins would bow out of negotiations for Wilson," wrote Los Angeles Times reporter, Mike DiGiovanna. "But the Marlins' offer is still on the table, according to a person close to negotiations."
The Texas Rangers were also learned to be a part of the number of teams that had put up big figures for C.J. Wilson, being in the range of four-years and a cool $60 million, but it seemed useless as compared to the Angels offer.
It is certainly undeniable that the Los Angeles Angels are more powerful than ever before, but what would surely be interesting to see is how these star players perform over the next few seasons.
