Los Angeles Angels look to push offensive initiative
If there’s one thing the Los Angeles Angels need, it’s the ability to look for more runs in 2011.
The previous year saw the club crash to its worst standings since 2003. The problem is clear and simple. The Angels need a good offense to generate good runs and protection during the coming season. They will need to add more value to their rotation as the
Texas Rangers will be bidding for the American League West title again.
Nevertheless, one thing is confirmed though. Kendry Morales will return to the Angels’ line-up after a long leave of absence. The phenomenal first baseman will be looking to add more power to the offensive pack as the season will kick off in April.
Morales lacks play time and his injury, suffered on May 29, 2010, will be something the management will consider when they decide to add a player in the remaining off season period.
Morales’ injury came when the hitter had an awkward left leg fall during a grand slam celebration that won the Angels a game against the Seattle Mariners, 5 – 1.
The options in the market include the likes of Jim Thome, Manny Ramirez, Jim Edmonds and Vladimir Guerrero. Angels’ manager Mike Scioscia recently said that the team would be interested in someone, who can get more appearances on the base.
"I think we definitely need on-base percentage - that's very clear", Mike Scioscia said and went on to say, "Independent of Kendry (Morales) coming back, we need some guys that are going to get on base and make some things happen”.
Guerrero will likely be the top pick for the team as his long tenure for the Angels before his move to the Texas Rangers, last year, demonstrates a good linkage with the players.
Guerrero, who finished 11th on the American League’s Most Valuable Player ballot, provides a good reason to the Angels for joining the roster. His batting average of .300 from last year gives him the edge over the other candidates. His on-base
percentage was .345 and his home runs count was on 29.
