Los Angeles Angels looking to make move as options decline
A large number of players have been searching for a new home in Major League Baseball. The off-season period has availed them the opportunity to press on for the coming season with a club they can familiarize themselves with. The
winter meetings were designed to hasten the signings progression and this year has not been different in such regards.
There have been major signings since the turn of November. Players have tied their association to major teams in the past 8 days with greater frequency. Speculation has raised the values of player services and clubs know that it
is not the best time to act. The Los Angeles Angels, however, have been less successful in the tenure. They have been linked with many agents in the market and though they have not signed good players on, they have been characterized as active.
However, as the New York Yankees push forward for Cliff Lee with a starting contract offer of $140 million, there has been confirmation on Carl Crawford’s signing with the Boston Red Sox. The two top players in baseball lie in
the range of being taken up by major teams and that has caused much shock in the market. The Angels have been looking to add power and speed to their line up, which leads many to believe that they might pursue Adrian Beltre.
Agent, Scott Boras issued a statement concerning his client, Beltre, saying, "Well, that's a very busy market for Adrian. We're in the middle of lot of negotiations with a lot of teams for him and they're ongoing. We're well down
the road with a lot of teams. It could be something (soon) or take a while, too. We're open to discussions with all teams on Adrian.
General Manager of the Angels, Tony Reagins was recently asked about his association with Lee and he easily clipped the query by saying, "This is one of those things where in this environment, a lot of those things get tossed around.
It's pretty obvious we're linked to every high-profile free agent out there. Sometimes it's accurate, and sometimes it's inaccurate. I haven't commented on who I've met with before or since, and I'm not going to do it now. We're going to conduct our business
privately."
It is understood the Angels do not want to comment on their pursuits, but then what could be expected in the coming days? I guess it is safe to say it is a surprise and for those who do not know, Reagins likes surprises.
