Los Angeles Angels lose interest in Zack Greinke – MLB Update
Reports are coming in the media that the Los Angeles Angels’ management has turned their attention towards other matters and somewhat lost interest in Zack Greinke who earlier was one of their top priorities.
Angels’ top management have recently made some official comments in the media that reflects a clearer picture of their potential future plans for signing new players. The Angels' general manager Jerry Dipoto also seemed certain on Greinke’s potential signing with the Angels.
He said on Thursday after attending 2012 Major League Baseball’s annual Winter Meetings in Nashville, "We're prepared to move on from Zack, Sometimes the smartest thing you can do is make practical decisions."
He added, “In the last 10 days, we've added four accomplished major league pitchers, Some have upside, some have durability. We've plugged holes in a quality way. Building one-through-12 depth on the pitching staff has been our goal throughout."
Dipoto further added, "I feel like we have 11 guys in place now, and every one of them can take the mound and give us competitive innings. From that extent, I feel like we're a pretty good team. … We aren't going to have to make further additions."
Experts believe that Angels have some other motives behind not signing Greinke this offseason. Though he performed tremendously last season with the Angels, but as soon as he filed for free agency, he started demanding a long-term hefty contract which Angels at the moment cannot afford. This is due to the salary cap concerns which the Major League Baseball authorities have implemented in the new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
Greinke, an eight-year Major League Baseball veteran, played the last season split between Milwaukee Brewers and Los Angeles Angels. He played really aggressive and showed his class. From the very beginning of the season, he performed with sheer consistency and impressed many with his performance.
Many believe that he showed one of the most impressive performances of his career. His career ERA of 3.77 is also considered one of the best in the entire league’s starting pitchers. Along with a good career ERA, he also possesses good 91-78 win-loss, 1332 strike-outs and 1.25 WHIP.
