Los Angeles Angels lose to Oakland Athletics 1-3 – MLB Update
Los Angeles Angels lost to the Oakland Athletics 1-3 at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California on Monday, September 10 in the opening game of their four match series.
Angels’ starting pitcher Dan Haren took his 11th loss of the season after he gave up four hits and three runs in six plus innings. Relief pitchers Jason Isringhausen, La Troy Hawkins and Jordan Walden combined to pitch 2.2 scoreless innings but
Angels’ hitters were unable to score enough runs on Monday.
For the A’s, starting pitcher Jarrod Parker produced a powerful pitching performance, giving up just three hits and one run in seven solid innings for his eighth win of the season.
Seth Smith provided Oakland with an excellent start as he earned an RBI groundout to first in the first inning to put his side on the board. Torii Hunter doubled to deep right in the third to level the score 1-1 in the third. Brandon Moss and Cliff Pennington
hit back-to-back home-runs to ensure Oakland reach home safely.
"It was definitely a big game for us," Pennington said. "They came into our place and did what they needed to do, so we needed to come in here that way. This was a good start. Right now, every game is huge. There's one or two differences in every game."
"I'm not surprised anymore at what they're doing," Hunter said of the A's in a post game interview. "I mean, we were surprised when they first started doing it in early August, but I'm not surprised anymore. They're playing the game, and they've got some
really good arms over there."
Angels will be very unhappy with the quality of their performance in a game that was crucial for both teams. Angels’ offence, in particular, should take the blame as it missed several scoring opportunities. The pitching rotation also struggled to execute
the game plan and the A’s took complete advantage of the situation.
Angels will be looking to regroup themselves and fight back in Game 2 to keep their playoff hopes alive. It will be interesting to see if they can come up with better tactics.
