Los Angeles Angels make emergency landing at LAX after mechanical issues in aircraft - MLB News
Members of the Los Angeles Angels baseball team got the scare of a life time when their plane that took off from Kansas City had to make an emergency landing due to problems in the aircraft.
According to Ian Gregor, spokesman of Federal Aviation Administration, the Boeing 737 landed without an incident just before 9 pm.
Delta Airlines commented that a charter that was carrying the members of the baseball team had to make an emergency landing at the Los Angeles International Airport due to mechanicals problems. Anthony Black, the spokesman for the airlines commented that
Boeing 737-800 aircraft was near the Los Angeles area when indicators pre-warned of possible problems within the hydraulic system of the aircraft. The plane was supposed to land at the John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana.
The team was on their way back after playing an away game in Missouri. After the landing, the team finished the rest of the journey to Anaheim by bus.
Reports state that crew within the aircraft was unsure about whether they’ll be able to make a safe stop so instead of taking a risk the Delta Charter that had 51 players and staff members travelling it in, diverted towards Los Angeles Airport.
Although there was no outwardly incident, according to the teams spokesman Ryan Cavinder, the mood in the plane was very serious and quiet as the pilots told about the hydraulic system issues and approached landing. As soon as the plane landed however, the
atmosphere changed and sighs of relief were heard all around. Cavinder commented, "Once we were down, there was applause, and everything was back to normal. This is a veteran group of travellers. I know this stuff doesn't happen all the time, but we're used
to the procedures."
The manager for the Angles, Mike Scioscia, commented that the media was up playing the event and in reality it wasn’t as big as an incident that it was portraying to be. He told a local newspaper, "It was really much ado about nothing. The flight attendants
and crew did an excellent job of keeping us informed and it turned out to be a very smooth landing.’’
Even though no one on board was harmed, Major League Baseball always has plans to implement in worst case scenarios. MLB has had disaster plans since 1965, but other sports leagues joined in on the trend after a tragic incident in 1970 that killed 38 members
of the Marshall University football team.
In all Major League sports, if few or more players are disabled or worse, killed, the team is required to fill up its roster by calling up players from Minor Leagues. In case of a worse, large scale tragedy, other teams from the same league are required
to provide players for the disabled team.
