Los Angeles Angels overpower Boston Red Sox, 5-3: MLB Update
The Los Angeles Angels brought an end to their two-game losing streak in great fashion by overpowering the Boston Red Sox, 5-3 at the Fenway Park on Wednesday May 3, to shorten the lead to 1-2 in the four-game series.
The Boston Red Sox’ starter, Josh Beckett, started the game with a strong first inning and sustained his performance until the end of fourth inning. The right-hand pitcher, who will celebrate his 31st birthday on May 15, held the Angels
to just one hit, allowed three walks and managed three strikeouts over four and 1/3 innings.
The Angels’ starter, Ervin Santana, on the other hand, tossed brilliantly to take out seven batters while allowing just one walk in four innings.
The conditions were completely in the favour of the pitchers, as the Sox’ reliever Matt Albers did not give any run to the batters over his 1 and 2/3 innings. On the other hand, the Angels’ reliever, Rich Thompson and Scott Downs also threw scoreless
innings and held the game to 0-0 in the sixth inning.
Finally, the Angels’ batter, Vernon Wells, led the game off by hammering a splendid two-run homer to the Sox’ reliever, Dan Wheeler, to take his team to 2-0. In the bottom of the seventh, Scott still not gave any run and held the Sox scoreless. Adrian
Gonzalez, however, in eighth inning, kicked off the Sox by touching an RBI single and trimmed the lead to 2-1.
The Angels’ batter, Eric Aybar, widened the lead to 3-1 adding an RBI single in the ninth inning, but the Sox’ slugger, Carl Crawford, scored an RBI single to shorten the lead by 3-2. Then Jacoby Ellsbury tied the game at 3-3 by adding another RBI
single forcing the game to the tenth inning.
In next three innings, closers from both sides held the batters from acquiring any run. However, the Sox’ closer, Daisuke Matsuzaka, threw wobbly pitches to the Angels’ top slugger, Bobby Abreu, who hit a leading RBI double to take the advantage to
5-3 for his Club.
The Angels closer, Trevor Bell, pitched the last four innings effectively holding the opposition scoreless, allowing just one walk while striking out three batters for his first save of the season.
