Los Angeles Angels’ pitcher Garrett Richards starts-off with a shaky beginning – MLB News
The Los Angeles Angels young pitcher Garrett Richards has played nicely during the 2012 Major League Baseball Spring Training. However, in the latest exhibition game with the Colorado Rockies, he started off with a slight shaky beginning giving away six runs in just over five innings.
Though this is not an overwhelmingly poor show for a player like Richards, who has just entered in the big league having no large experience, but still many have been criticising him with his latest performance. Some also believe that Richards with his latest performance against the Rockies, has slipped his chances to become their fifth starter in the coming season.
This is true that Angels’ were looking deeply for a fifth starter, but with a one bad performance they cannot change their mind altogether on fifth starter’s position. Despite giving a slight low average performance in the game against the Rockies , Richards is happy for his small stint in the Spring Training as well in the exhibition games while looking hopeful for his coming year’s commitment with the team.
“I’m happy with my performance today,” Richards said. “I worked the ball in and out and kept the ball down in the zone. … I’m out there working on stuff, but I’m also trying to be competitive.”
Later, the Angels’ manager Mike Scioscia said for Richards, “He definitely pitched better than the linescore would show,”
Richards, a 27-year old, has spent lots of time in the Minor League plying with Single-A Cedar Rapids and earned All Star selection in Midwest League. He has also played for High-A Rancho Cucamonga and Double-A Arkansas. Having large experience in the Minors, Richards certainly knows he still has many areas to cover in the coming years.
Last year, he played total seven games for the club and went with 5.79 ERA along with 0-2 win loss record, 9 strikeouts and 1.64 WHIP. Many in the Angels’ franchise predicted several good things for this new development that both believed to prolong in the future seasons as well. The coming season will also test his skills where all the major players are also coming to prove their game.
