Los Angeles Angels post a comprehensive 5-1 victory against Detroit Tigers – MLB Update
The Los Angeles Angels outplayed the Detroit Tigers at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, defeating the Tigers 5-1 on Monday, July 4.
The Detroit Tigers’ did not get a chance to establish themselves either on the mound or the plate as the home side batters continued to score at regular intervals and the pitchers allowed just five hits and one-run in the entirety of the game.
Joel Pineiro showed his experience at the mound for the Angels as the seasoned campaigner recorded his fourth win this season. This victory took him to a career highlight of 100 wins. Pineiro pitched in seven innings, conceding just five hits and a sole-run
in the fourth inning off Magglio Ordonez’s bat. Other than this, it was a walk in the park for the Angels. The relief pitchers came on and finished off things smoothly without conceding any further hits.
Charlie Furbush was unimpressive at the mound for the Tigers. Furbush pitched for just over four expensive innings, giving away five hits and three runs in the process. Although he managed five strike-outs, they were not enough to prevent his second loss
this season. Furbush now has a win-loss record of 1-2.
Furbush was replaced by the relief pitchers but to no avail. Lester Oliveros and Phil Coke gave away one-run apiece with only Ryan Perry managing to record a clean sheet. Perry’s effort however, could not bring any optimism to the Detroit bull-pen.
The Angels, on the other hand, did not let the flow of runs come to a standstill. Torri Hunter’s massive 427-feet home-run got things underway for the Angels in the first inning. Peter Bourjos and Alberto Callaspo added one run each in the third and fifth
inning respectively before Vernon Wells took on the responsibility and added two runs to the total. His first run came in the sixth inning before he unleashed his arms in the eighth to complete the icing on the cake with a rocketing 431-feet hit for his 12th
home-run this season.
Jim Leyland, the Detroit manager commended the Angels’ plan of action throughout the game. He said, “They looked like they had somebody standing everywhere we hit it. They played a perfect game. Steals, made some double plays, really good."
Leyland also praised Furbush’s effort and said that the young starter needs to put things behind to stay focussed on the game. He needs to get his confidence back before the start of the next game.
The win for the Angels brings their win-loss record at terms with the Tigers, both at 45-41 now. Angels now have a one-game lead in the three-game series and it will be interesting to see how the Tigers claw their way back into this series.
