Los Angeles Angels season review - 2012 Major League Special
Los Angeles Angels started their 2012 Major League Baseball season on a high note. They entered as big spenders on some of the big names of MLB, but as the regular-season has ended on October 4th, their all expensive players proved that they were
quite ordinary in the field.
Angels’ payroll was fourth highest in the league while they also made a largest single day free agent signings in the league’s history bringing Pujols and C.J Wilson. However, not only Angels’ disappointed with their performance but they did not even match
the brilliance of going into the playoffs.
Named as big spenders this winter, Angels’ now are in deep trouble to tackle the situation which is already building up. Fans reaction, game strategy and Angels’ response within the organisation are the big issues, they as a team need to deal with.
Many experts and sports journalists have recently spoken to Angels’ general manager Jerry Dipoto regarding his thoughts and the disappointment his team brought despite labelled as World Series contenders. Dipoto told those reporters in detail and tried to
explain the different aspects of Angels’ overall failure.
Dipoto said, "Failure is a relative term, we could win 90 ... games, I don't want to call that a successful season, but I don't know that I'd deem it a failure. We came up short. That's for certain. And we have to figure out how to not come up short next
time."
Though these above comments are giving very optimistic approach by the Angels’ top man but still his views also gives a slight aggressive motive that Angels were short in response to the level of expectations.
Dipoto added, "We have a variety of decisions to make in the short term with contract options and pending free agents. That's something we'll address early in offseason, Building pitching depth on the major league club and from an organizational perspective
-- we have to address that.”
Dipoto’s comments which are also ambiguous at the moment and which are also debatable that whether he and rest of the franchise officials make changes in the 2013 roster by signing or releasing some major players.
During the entire regular season, the Angels bullpen produced total 22 saves while playing mostly against the American League teams. This was certainly a bad outcome in the presence of big names like Zack Greinke, who was acquired from the Brewers’ in the
midseason.
Overall Angels 89-73 win-loss and .549 winning percentage could not match against the Texas Rangers and Oakland’s fine performances. Both AL West teams were far better than Angels’ all season-long struggling performances. Both teams finally made into post
season while the Angels’ remained in that tight loop-hole which eventually caused them with a third place finish ahead of Seattle Mariners.
In the meanwhile, now is the right time for the Angels’ to make some drastic decisions on some of their struggling players which will eventually give them much room to sign some fire power in the batting lineup. Torii Hunter, Dan Haren, Zack Greinke and
Ervin Santana are the few names who might not play in the next season and at the same time, the Angels will also be happy to review their about $155 million payroll.
