Los Angeles Angels show interest in free-agent pitcher Sean Burnett – MLB Update
The Los Angeles Angels are showing great interest in free agent relief pitcher Sean Burnett who is also garnering interest from other Major League teams including St. Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Brewers.
"We like Sean, we'd like to bring him back, but it has to make sense for us," Nationals' General Manager Mike Rizzo told reporters Monday on the first day of baseball's winter meetings. "Right now, I don't see a fit financially."
Sources say that veteran reliever is expecting a long term deal between $15-18 million however; other sources are also saying that his agent is trying hard to convince him on a short-term deal with a leading Major League team. Some teams have already offered him a one year deal but Burnett is resisting accepting a short term deal.
On the other hand, now reports are coming in the media that the Angels’ management is showing great interest in his free agency. The Angels’ top executives have just attended Major League Baseball’s annual Winter Meetings in Nashville and have shown interest to sign former Washington Nationals' Sean Burnett.
Burnett played for the Nationals and achieved consistent numbers. He finished with 2.38 ERA along with two saves, 57 strike-outs and 1.24 WHIP. His overall career ERA of 3.58 along with ten saves, 267 strike-outs and 1.34 WHIP also makes him a great player in the league.
“They’ll be in the mix for a fifth starting job or at least as starting depth, We’d like to get a second left-hander, It’s not a necessity because our right-handed relievers get out left-handers well, but in a perfect world we’d like to get a second,” Rizzo said.
Experts believe that this is a healthy sign for Angels’ that they have realised the need for a good reliever in the roster as well. Last season, the Angels performed with low winning average and could not show any aggressive plays.
Despite having some of the very good pitchers, they still could not capitalised on their pitching fire power and lost too many games however, now if they do sign some more good pitchers, their overall productivity will be increased.
