Los Angeles Angels shutout Boston Red Sox Sox, 11-0 in 2-2 series tier: MLB Update
The Los Angeles Angels romped to a smashing 11-0 victory in the fourth game against the Boston Red Sox and tied the four-game series 2-2 at the Fenway Park on Thursday May 5.
The Angels’ starter, Joel Pineiro, pitched two exceptional hit-less innings to take his team into dominating position. Joel held the opposition score-less, while the batters grabbed the game to their side by adding early runs in third inning.
Howard Kendrick added a runs batted in (RBI) led off single and then Alberto Callaspo smashed the ball brilliantly to the deep right side of the diamond to add two more runs in the same inning. In the fourth inning, Kendrick touched another RBI single
to take a 4-0 lead. Following this, Bobby Abreu and Torrii Hunter then added an RBI single each to send the opposition under more pressure.
Kendrick gave a clue that they were ready to swing their bats with full right from the start. Kendrick said. "We came in this morning and got the bats rolling early.  Definitely feels good to get the last two, especially after they swept us."
The Sox’ batters, on other hand, were having trouble in facing fastballs by Joel and hence could not generate even a single run on any of his pitch. Joel pitched five and 2/3 innings, gave just three hits, four walks and struck out two batters to earn
his first win of the season with 0.71 ERA.
On the other hand, the Sox were not ready to change their struggling starter, John Lackey, but the Angels’ first baseman, Mark Trumbo’s 398-feet long two-run homer forced the Sox to relive Lackey with Jeff Mathis. Lackey pitched four innings, allowed
eight runs on ten hits, walked three and made just one strikeout in his fourth loss of the season.
Lackey was not pleased with his performance at all and said, "Last night was rough on the guys. I definitely think there is a sense of me needing to pitch well to get some momentum going, for sure. If I would have pitched better early on I think guys
might have found a little more energy."
The Sox has changed Lackey to put some hurdle in the Angels’ swinging bats, but the deployment did not bring positive results for the Boston. Mathis being under extreme pressure allowed two straight walks and then threw wobbly pitch for a single. On
his next pitch, the Angles’ hitter, Erick Aybar, added an RBI single to take his team to 9-0. The Sox relieved Mathis with Scott Atchison.
Atchison pitched strong sixth inning, but he could not take his team back into the game. However, he strived hard to do his best as he tossed strong pitches, but was not fortunate enough to stop the Angels bat. In the seventh, Bobby Abreu, touched
RBI double to end Scott’s score-less innings.
The Sox’ closer, Rich Hill, remained successful against the heavy batting line up and pitched one and 1/3 scoreless inning. The Angels’ reliever, Rich Thompson and closer Fernando Rodriguez also remained score-less like Joel.
