Los Angeles Angels slip to New York Yankees 5-6 – MLB Recap
The Los Angeles Angels lost to the New York Yankees 5-6 in the first game of their three-match series on Friday, July 13 at Yankee Stadium.
Despite showing a balanced performance, the Angels fell short in the end and lost with a narrow margin of one run.
Starter C.J. Wilson gave a healthy start to the Angels with his first five innings spell as he received only two runs and two earned runs. He also struck-out seven Yankees' batters as his ERA remained consistent at 2.43.
Wilson said, “When Teixeira came up, I was thinking to myself, 'Oh, here comes the double-play ball, Scott's going to get out of it again, It didn't go that way, and that's unfortunate, but in the grand scheme of the season, Scott's obviously thrown the ball really well and we trust him."
However, the real damage was done when Scott Downs came to pitch and in just 0.2 innings, he gave four runs and four earned runs which proved disastrous for the Angels in the end as they lost despite having a good start from their starting pitcher.
On the other hand, the Yankees played well and proved their valour. They played as one unit and never showed any loop-holes in their game.
Hiroki Kuroda despite giving five runs was still able to save the game for the Yankees. He struck-out six batters as his ERA remained consistent at 3.67.
Yankees' manager Joe Girardi said, "I always talk about how players want to feel like they're contributing, and he had a great night tonight, He threw three guys out. He had the game-winning hit. He had good at-bats. He did a good job with [Hiroki] Kuroda. He had a great night."
Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira performed tremendously and scored two runs, smashed two hits and made five RBIs on his four at-bats.
His performance was certainly one of the winning factors for the Yankees.
Teixeira helped the Yankees take control of the game early in the match as the Angels’ remained handcuffed by their opposing starting rotation throughout the game and eventually lost it by a narrow margin.
