Los Angeles Angels snatch series-opener over-powering Cleveland Indians 2-1 - MLB Update
The American League’s Los Angeles Angels romped to a 2-1 victory, in a low scoring game against the Cleveland Indians at Angel Stadium on Friday, May 6 to take 1-0 lead in three-game series.
The Angels’ starter, Tyler Chatwood tossed strong eight innings, gave one run over two hits, allowed five walks, one earned run and made five strike-outs to take his second win of the season. Chatwood gave away the only run in fourth inning when the Indians’
designated hitter, Travis Hafner grounded out to first allowing Asdrubal Cabrera to score a leading run.
"That's just how baseball goes sometimes," Chatwood said. "I'm just out there trying to keep us in the game. Pitching Coach Mike Butcher and I worked hard after that last start to kind of smooth some things out with my mechanics and I felt good tonight.
The offence has been doing a great job all year and the defence has, too."
The Angels’ relievers, Scott Downs, Jordan Walden and closer Fernando Rodney tossed shut-out innings holding the Indians to just one run until the end of the game. Out of these pitchers, Walden was the one who allowed a hit over one inning.
The Indians’ starter, Justin Masterson had a splendid outing, as he gave just one run and one earned run over nine innings, walked none and made five strike-outs over seven innings to achieve his fifth victory of the season. Justin gave a tying run to the
Angels’ Maicer Izturis, who touched to right-field for a RBI single to tie the game at 1-1 in the sixth inning. Justin has not lost a single game in 2011 and now has a 5-0 record with a 2.11 ERA.
The Indians’ manager Manny Acta was pleased with the hurler’s extraordinary performance.
Acta appreciated the right-hand pitcher saying, "Masterson was very good," Acta said. "He threw 120 pitches his last outing and couldn't push him any further, but he gave us seven innings tonight. It might sound funny, but we swung the bat good -- even though
it does not show on the scoreboard. We squared up some balls, but they made some good plays."
The Indians’ relievers, Rafael Perez, Vinnie Pestano, and Joe Smith did not let the Angels make any score and forced the game to tenth inning. In the tenth, closer Justin Germano, despite throwing seven strikes of nine pitches, denoted a defeat-earning run
to the Angels’ Torii Hunter, who splashed a hit to deep left for a RBI single.
