Los Angeles Angels win 5-4 in a nail-biting encounter against Chicago White Sox – MLB Update
The Los Angeles Angels held their nerves in the ninth inning after an impressive start to defeat the Chicago White Sox 5-4 in what was as a classic game of baseball at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California on Tuesday, August 23.
The White Sox seemed shaky in the field and this was confirmed when Juan Pierre’s error in the left field allowed Peter Bourjos to add the crucial first run for the Angels. In the end, this extra run turned out to be the difference between both sides.
Howard Kendrick took complete advantage of this parched performance by the White Sox when he smashed Mark Buehrle for massive home-run towards centre field in the second inning to take the lead to 2-0.
Buehrle had an ordinary game from the mound as he leaked four runs amid seven hits in six hard-worked innings amid seven hits. He committed three errors in his spell and managed just two strike-outs to see his earned-run average soar to 3.19 for the season.
The White Sox made a strong reply in the third inning when Gordon Beckham’s brilliance saw them level the score at 2-2. Beckham’s RBI effort towards left field allowed Brent Morel to add the first run for Chicago before he completed his own run in the subsequent
play by Alejandro De Aza towards shortstop.
The Angels did not let the flow of runs come to a halt as Maicer Izturis and Kendrick added a run each in the third and fourth inning to maintain their two-run advantage over the visitors.
Ervin Santana has been effective for the Angels this season and he replicated his form in this game as well. He pitched just one inning less than a complete game and leaked four-runs amid nine hits in his spell. He threw a total of 115 pitches and managed
74 strikes in the process.
It was Jordan Walden in the end, however, who won the game for the Angels with a perfect last inning under immense pressure. With scores level at 4-4 at the top of the ninth inning, Walden did not allow a single hit to the White Sox to win his fourth game
of the season before Erick Aybar added the all-important fifth run late in the ninth inning.
The Angels lead the two-game series 1-0.
