Los Angeles Clippers Public Announcer David Courtney passes away – NBA News
David Courtney, the veteran public announcer of the Los Angeles Clippers, Kings and Angels, died on Thursday at the age of 56. The Clippers organization released a statement in which they said that he died in Los Angeles, but did not give any more details about the events surrounding his death.
Courtney announced the Los Angeles Kings games for 24 long years, including their run to the Stanley Cup championship last season. He also spent the last 19 summers as the public announcer for the Los Angeles Angels. He was the announcer for the 2002 NHL All Star Game, the 2010 MLB All Star Game and last year’s NBA All Star Game. He had also worked in the 1981 NBA Finals, the 2002 World Series and the 2012 Stanley Cup Finals.
Courtney was in his fifth season as the public announcer for the Clippers, and had served for three seasons as the backup with the team before that. The Clippers team released a statement in which they paid tribute to the veteran announcer and gave the due respect to the man who had been the voice of their games for so many years.
"Today our organization lost a good friend. In his years as public address announcer for Clippers' home games, David Courtney was a consummate professional who brought a unique passion and energy to every event,” said the team in a released statement.
Courtney started working in professional sports at the young age of 14, starting as a public relations assistant for the Kings in 1971. In 1978, he moved to Houston as the public relations officer of the Houston Aeros in the World Hockey Association. When the team dissolved a year later, he found himself in high demand in radio and television as a public announcer, which became the start of his long and illustrious career. Over his career, he has also done traffic and sports updates for three Los Angeles Radio stations. He also held voice roles in Hollywood films “The Tooth Fairy” and “Angels in the Outfield”, as well as in the hit television comedy “Home Improvement”. He is survived by his wife Janet.
