Los Angeles Clippers management refuses to discuss Vinny Del Negro’s head coaching future – NBA News
A day after the Los Angeles Clippers were knocked out of the NBA playoffs with a 4-0 sweep by the rampant San Antonio Spurs, they were not willing to talk about the future of their head coach Vinny Del Negro.
The Clippers have a team option on their coach of two years, but must make up their mind before June 1st.
"That's not what we're here to talk about. Coaching contracts, GM contracts, trainer contracts, that's not today. ... All that stuff will sort itself out” said General Manager Neil Olshey on Monday.
“I think Vinny did a great job, and that's as far as I'm going to go today," he added.
Vinny Del Negro also refused to comment on his position in the Clippers team and said;
“Im not gonna get into all my contract stuff. It's a waste of energy and whatever I say, you're not gonna listen anyway, so it doesn't matter”
Del Negro joined the Clippers as head coach in 2010 and has since led the team to a 72-76 regular season record and a 4-7 playoff record over the last two seasons.
Before that, Vinny was the head coach of the Chicago Bulls for two seasons, and led them to an 81-81 record and two first round eliminations in the NBA playoffs. He spoke out recently against Bulls General Manager Gar Forman after
his team advanced to the Western Conference Semi Finals, saying that Forman and the Bulls management did not make him comfortable while he was at Chicago.
Chris Paul had high praise for his coach for the second straight day when he said that he thought Vinny had done a fabulous job managing the different personalities that were part of the Clippers roster this season. And Del Negro
has proof of his performance, as he led the Clippers to their 3rd Western Conference Semi Final appearance in franchise history.
Vinny was criticized when in the regular season, the Clippers lost home games to Golden State and Phoenix in March, and then went on the road to lose to Indiana Pacers, Oklahoma City Thunder and New Orleans Hornets.
He at that time, had said that he was not worried about the criticism and was not fearful for his job, nor would he let criticism or any potential threats to his job security affect the way he coaches the team.
