Los Angeles Clippers to play two point guards in all the season games - NBA Update
Thirty five years old Chauncey Billups has been in NBA for over a decade now.
During the period, he has represented six different teams but it never affected his performance one bit. However, all the experience has taught him one thing about himself and that is the fact that although he has been equally
successful from all the positions he has played in the court, the major share of the success has come from playing as a point guard.
He is most comfortable in that position and that is what he said to his new team’s coach Vinny Del Negro.
As Los Angeles Clippers already have point guards in great supply, Negro confirmed he will be using two point guards in this season scrimmages - both newly acquired players, Chris Paul and Billups.
And although, Negro is uncertain if this strategy will work, he added “we are hoping it will”.
Billups was expected to play as a shooting guard after Clippers acquired Paul, but having realized his game, Billups clearly stated his plans to play as a point guard to the coach, who then accepted his plea and made the announcement
of a two-point guards strategy.
"I'm always going to be a point guard," Billups said. "In my head, and talking with Vinny and all that, we're just playing two point guards. The mindset to being a shooting guard is totally different. I haven't had that mindset
in probably 10 years as my game has evolved. I'm going to go out there and be aggressive at all times”
The strategy worked well for the team in the preseason finale against Los Angeles Lakers, where the duo showed good understanding and led the team to an impressive win.
Paul, who is easily the best point guard in the league, seems to be ok at the prospect of pairing up with Billups. Although, he knows he will have to alter his game significantly but believes the combination would work well. He
has been in such situations in the past and managed it perfectly, so it’s safe to assume Clippers would just do fine.
"I think we can make it work. I don't have all the answers, but you'll never find two people more committed to making it work” Paul said.
Clippers will enter this season as the favorites for the first time in the franchise’s 35 years history because of the roster they have, and if Paul and Billups combination works, who knows, they might stun the teams like Miami
Heat, Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers.
