Los Angeles Dodgers Vice Chairman, Steve Soboroff hits back at Baseball commissioner Bud Selig
When the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied out at the Dodgers’ stadium to take on the Atlanta Braves, their Vice Chairman, Steve Soboroff, took the opportunity to hit back at Major League Baseball Commissioner, Bud Selig, for enveloping the prestigious club under
the baseball authority’s control.
The executive met with a group of reporters during the fixture and talked extensively on the issue, which has taken the supporters by surprise. Soboroff spoke in defence of club owner and Chairman Frank McCourt.
He reiterated his stance on the situation that has landed the Dodgers under the control of Selig. The team’s day to day activities will be handled by MLB and the executive was calling the decision by the commissioner, ‘irresponsible’.
Selig took control of the club on April 20, 2011, and he released a statement concerning the decision. He expressed concern over the finances and operations of the organization. He cited his primary reason for control on protecting the fans, the club and
the prestige of the Major League Baseball format.
However, Soboroff claims that the side was always in a sound financial state. With a 20-year, $3 billion television contract with Fox on the horizon, things looked good for the Dodgers. Similarly, McCourt was in no financial crunch as well, said the vice
chairman, who joined Los Angeles on April 19, 2011.
"Frank has money in the bank", said Soboroff. "He has a $3 billion deal with FOX. Not on [a credit card], he's got it on [an ATM card]. And the only thing to keep him from sticking [the ATM card] in the machine is this letter. Can't we talk to the commissioner?
Can't we talk to the people who are going to vote on this"?
Soboroff feels the MLB has been signalling out the Dodgers and McCourt. He referred to the announcement that did not suggest a stand in representative.
"Obviously, they are", Soboroff said. "What teams in America have a $2.5 billion deal ready to go. And where does that put the Dodgers? That puts them in the upper echelons in the financial situation of all other teams".
Whatever the case may be, the Dodgers are in tatters and they need to reach stability if they hope to make it to the playoffs this year.
