Los Angeles Dodgers acquire Josh Beckett, Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford as they aim for glory
One man’s garbage is another man’s gold. This seems to be the case in the deal that has shaken the world of baseball on Saturday. With the Boston Red Sox growing increasingly worried about the humongous salary Josh Beckett, Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford
fetched from their budget, sending them to the Los Angeles Dodgers through the trade has now relieved them. On the other hand, the deal has put the Dodgers in an ideal position to win the World Series Championship.
What is amazing in this regard is the fact that as soon as Adrian Gonzalez plays his first game in for the Dodgers he hit a home-run, announcing himself in style.
He boarded the plane and dismounted in Los Angeles only to see the fans greeting and showing respect for him.
Perhaps encouraged by the way he was treated he put on the blue uniform and reciprocated the fans’ enthusiasm with a home-run, helping the Dodgers record an easy victory against the Miami Marlins.
As far as the deal is concerned, the Dodgers have their roster now filled with players that can help them experience glory. However, this has come with the underlying strain on the budget and the liability to pay huge amount of money to these players in
the future.
On the other hand, Red Sox after struggling in the season are happy because the deal has provided them the prospects that can lift the team for years to come. Along with this, the criticism which was growing earlier against the management owing to the money
these players were earning will subside now.
Red Sox chairman Tom Werner has stated this view.
"If it falls into place, the deal sheds us from tens of millions of dollars of long-term commitments. It gets us great prospects who will improve our major league roster as soon as next year. It brings us a player in James Loney who was 'untouchable' a couple
of years ago. It allows us to start over with free agents," he said.
It will be interesting to see how these players contribute for the Dodgers in their bid for winning the World Series this year.
