Los Angeles Dodgers lead Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1 in four-game series after win in game three: MLB Update
The National League’s (NL) Los Angeles Dodgers overpowered the League rivals Pittsburgh Pirates 2-0 in the third outing at the PNC Park on Wednesday, May 11, to take a 2-1 lead in the four-game series.
The game’s only runs came in the sixth inning, when the Dodger’s third baseman, Juan Uribe hit a grounder for a runs-batted-in (RBI) single off the Pirates’ starter, Paul Maholm. Then, Jerry Sands hit towards the deep right side of the field to earn another
RBI single in the same inning to take the lead to 2-0.
The Dodgers’ starter, Hiroki Kuroda had a splendid day with the ball as he threw seven shutout innings to earn his team their eighteenth victory in front of 12,910 officially announced spectators. The 36-year-old veteran ball thrower allowed just three hits,
three walks and struck out eight batters for his fourth win of the season.
Dodgers were in need of a splendid performance from Kuroda, as they made just five hits of their own. The Dodgers’ manager, Don Mattingly was pleased with the brilliant contribution of his starter in his seventh start of the season.
Mattingly said while speaking to reporters after the match, "He can do pretty much what he wants with the baseball, if he's going. And that allows him to stay in ballgames."
Reliever Matt Guerrier provided an ideal back up to Kuroda, pitching shutout one inning for his sixth save of the season. Closer Vicente Padilla threw one-hit last inning and took out two batters for his third win of the season.
Maholm gave away just two runs over five hits but stayed winless against the Dodgers, one of the three NL team he has never beaten. Maholm allowed five walks and took out three batters over six innings for his fifth loss of the season in six starts. He has
a 1-5 record with 3.60 ERA.
"It was just one of those plays where it was hit and where we weren't able to make a play," Maholm said. "My job is to get outs, to get deeper in the game. In the sixth I didn't do the job."
The Pirates’ Relievers, Daniel McCutchen and Jose Veras, did not give away any run while closer Joe Beimel also pitched a perfect last inning but could not gather win for his Club.
Jim Reynolds was umpiring at the home plate. Mike Dimuro, Andy Fletcher and Tim Welke were umpiring at the first, second and third base, respectively.
