Los Angeles Dodgers sign Tony Gwynn Jr. for two years – MLB News
For many, the Los Angeles Dodgers have taken a right decision extending their outfielder Tony Gwynn Jr.’s contract for next two years in a relatively good deal of worth $2 million.
Gwynn Jr. was on the line to become a free agent this offseason as both sides earlier remained unable to agree on an extension. However, when a couple of teams tried to contact Gwynn Jr.’s agent while the Dodgers’ management woke up and signed him for the
next two years.
Gwynn has also said explaining all the details about the recent progress that has been made in his deal’s extension. He commented in the media telling a sports journalist, “The first offer they made me was a two-year deal, I hadn’t even thought of that.
When they came with a two-year deal, my ears immediately perked up. I was a lot calmer with the whole process [this year]; I was coming off a much better season. I was comfortable going through the whole process. I knew I was going to have a job somewhere.
But I wanted to stay here. I really enjoyed the coaching staff. I enjoyed being with the players. That suits me really well, that’s not just a Dodger thing.”
Though he has told several things about his contract but still he did not tell which teams persuaded him for play for them. Still some inside sources have mentioned that the New York Yankees including the Baltimore Orioles and Chicago White Sox were after
him with some reasonable money.
Contrary to that of persuaded by some other teams in the league, the Dodgers somehow took it seriously and ensured his presence for a further two years. This is also a possibility that the Dodgers management might offer him a third optional year as well.
The Los Angeles Dodgers, who will be facing real competition in the next season with the Los Angeles Angels, are having trouble making their roster stronger at the moment. This late decision of signing Tony Gwynn Jr. for next couple of years certainly will
help them to maintain a perfect consistency level in the franchise.
