Los Angeles Dodgers’ whitewash San Diego Padres 4-1 to take 3-0 series sweep – MLB Update
The Los Angeles Dodgers’ pitching depth destroyed the San Diego Padres’ batting line-up and took a 4-1 win to whitewash the opposition completely at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on Sunday, July 10.
The Dodgers’ starter Ted Lilly struggled in the start and gave away a game opening one-run homer to the Padres’ catcher Rob Johnson in the top of the third inning. However, after this he made a perfect come-back and held the Padres’ batting squad under pressure.
He made seven strike-outs, allowed four hits and walked two batters over five innings.
The relievers were able to provide crucial support, as he confirmed his sixth win of the season. Taking this win improved his record to 6-9 with a 4.79 ERA but he still has a long way to go to make a mark in this season.
"Disappointed is not enough to describe how I feel about my own performance so far," Lilly said. "Going into the second half, I'm going to take these next few days to evaluate what I need to do to turn things around and help us make a big comeback."
After Lilly, Kenley Jansen tossed just over one inning, Hong-Chih Kuo just one pitch, Matt Guerrier tossed less than a full inning to hold his tenth game and Mike MacDougal threw one complete inning to grab his sixth hold of the season. Closer Javy Guerra
also tossed a one-hitter ninth inning to take his fourth save of the season.
The batting squad gave full support to the pitching depth and scored four runs to secure their 41st win of the season. Matt Kemp scored an RBI double on fielder’s choice to third base. Then right-fielder Andre Ethier blistered two one-run homers,
first in the fifth and the second in the eighth inning.
After launching this hit, Ethier confirmed his name in the second straight All-Star game.
Ethier commented on his performance and said, "I was just getting into some bad habits this year and some bad approaches, and I let those spirals into some other things. It is tough to break those habits when you are going out there and just getting hits
and knocks.”
Before this win, the Dodgers have blanked the Padres 1-0 in each of the first two games of the series. Now after achieving their perfect combination in the field, the Dodgers’ appointed players will land in competition between the American League and National
League for the All-Star game at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona
