Los Angeles Kings' Drew Doughty living the hockey dream at 22 -NHL Update
Many hockey players spend their entire careers in the pursuit of a single Stanley Cup championship, but Drew Doughty has changed the standards and shown that almost anything is possible if you try.
At the young age of 22, the player that is already termed to be one of the best defensemen in the league, now also has a Stanley Cup championship under his belt, something he contributed to in a major way with the Los Angeles Kings.
He won a gold medal during the 2010 Winter Olympics with Team Canada at the age of 20 and continues to break barriers and set new standards for the younger players entering the league.
In his fourth season with the Los Angeles Kings, Drew Doughty has seen what most hockey players will never see in their lives, and that all just is not granted, it definitely takes hard work and courage.
"The guys start from day one in training camp,” Doughty said. "We worked so hard together, we create bond. We're with each other so much of the day and so much throughout the week. To win for the hardworking group and guys that you love is huge.”
"[It's] pretty emotional. There's so many things going through my body right now I don't even know what to say. Just to do it with these guys is amazing. I already won one and I want to win another one. I don't even know what to say," he added.
Prior to the 2011-2012 regular season, it was even seen that Doughty might be making a transition to another team after his three-year, entry-level contract came to an end, but luckily, things worked out between the team and him and he is playing better
than ever now.
Drafted as the second overall player during round-one of the 2008 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft by the Los Angeles Kings, Doughty has played in 316 games so far with 162 points (43 goals, 119 assist) and 247 minutes in penalty time.
Now on an eight-year, $56 million contract, Doughty is on the Kings team till July 1st, 2019, giving him more than an enough time to excel in every department of the game.
