Los Angeles Kings' backup goalie Jonathan Bernier might get traded soon -NHL Free Agency Reports
They might have the same name, but there is a huge difference between Jonathan Quick and Jonathan Bernier, both of whom are goalies for the Los Angeles Kings squad at the moment.
The difference definitely showed when Jonathan Quick led Los Angeles to their first Stanley Cup championship in franchise history but for Bernier, just the lack of exposure ultimately cost him the chance to prove himself an equal, if not better.
Looking to move on and become the leader of a team in need, Jonathan Bernier has not only requested, but demanded Los Angeles to trade him before the 2012-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular seasons kicks off later on in October of this year.
It has been learnt that the 23-year-old goalie had wanted to be traded off earlier during the regular season, prior to the trade deadline, but not having Quick confirmed for another year at that moment, Los Angeles denied his request.
"I asked the Kings to trade me before the trade deadline, but they refused," Bernier said. "Now that Jonathan Quick signed a long-term deal, I expect to be traded before training camp starts."
It is easy to see when a player like Bernier, who had the opportunity to appear in just 16 games and lost six flat with a .909 save percentage and 2.36 goals-against average, he would definitely be looking for a transition.
At the moment, Jonathan Bernier is on a two-year contract worth $2.5 million. Money does not seem to be the problem for him, but instead, it is the exposure he is yearning for to become a leading goalie on a team and with Jonathan Quick here to stay for
at least another 10-years, Bernier will need to find a new home for himself.
A trade is expected by top hockey analysts and it could be taking place as soon as sometime next week, if not later on in the offseason, but will definitely be done prior to training camp as Kings have unofficially accepting his demands of being sent off,
according to recent reports emerging.
Jonathan Bernier was picked up by Los Angeles as the 11th overall back in 2006.
