Los Angeles Kings-New Jersey Devils Stanley Cup Final series review –NHL Special
There is nothing in the way of the Los Angeles Kings that is keeping them from celebrating their first Stanley Cup championship in franchise history, but looking back at the series, there were a number of twists and turns that will go down in history as
one of the most intense ever.
New Jersey Devils topped the Eastern Conference while Kings emerged as the victors of the West. As it was with Boston Bruins and Vancouver Canucks back in 2011, the East turned out to be victorious, but now, it was time for the sunny side to emerge on top.
"They've been waiting longer than I have, this city," Kings’ captain, Dustin Brown, said after winning Game 6 of the 2012 National Hockey League (NHL) Stanley Cup Finals. "You dream of winning the Cup, and you know what, I'm glad I was the first King to
ever lift it."
The series was definitely exciting in every way, which is why we will go back and look at it from Game 1 and onwards:
Game 1 at Prudential Center
It was the beginning of the Stanley Cup Finals in New Jersey which had fans betting on the Devils but amazingly, Los Angeles Kings and their hot goalie, Jonathan Quick, came out ever so strong after a long rest to down the home team, 2-1, in overtime.
"It's just a big win, a big win in Game 1, and we focus now on Game 2 and try to win Game 2," Kings’ defenseman, Jarret Stoll, said. "It doesn't matter if it's two in a row or 40 in a row on the road, the numbers don't really matter right now. It's whether
or not we find a way to win."
Game 2 at Prudential Center
New Jersey Devils needed the win badly as they were at home and had the next on the road but Kings’ Jeff Carter got the second straight overtime win with his post-regulation game-winner at 13:42.
Kings were perfect on the road in the series as they held on to a 10-0 advantage, making them the first franchise to do so in the NHL playoffs.
Game 3 at STAPLES Center
This game was just amazingly played by the Kings once again as Jonathan Quick blocked all 22 shots on the net while his teammates scored four straight on Martin Brodeur to take the dominating victory and put New Jersey on the verge of a clean sweep elimination
in Game 4.
Game 4 at STAPLES Center
Almost everyone thought that Los Angeles Kings would give New Jersey Devils the same fate as St. Louis Blues in the Western Conference semi-finals but surprisingly, Devils found that much needed spark and fought their way back.
It was rookie forward, Adam Henrique who scored the game-winner in the final minutes of the third period to break the 1-1 tie and take their first match.
Game 5 at Prudential Center
New Jersey Devils continued to play with that same Game 4 momentum and downed Los Angeles Kings by a dominating 3-1 differential which certainly turned the table for many as Devils were now bound to make a historic comeback into the series.
Game 6 at STAPLES Center
New Jersey was determined to force a Game 7 back at home but Los Angeles could not take any risks and just went in full throttle. They scored six goals and routed Devils 6-1 as New Jersey’s offence just fell flat in every perspective, making Kings the new
champions of the hockey world.
