Los Angeles Kings down New Jersey Devils 2-1 in OT to take 2-0 lead in Stanley Cup Finals -NHL Update
New Jersey was prepared to do more and play better come Game 2 of the 2012 National Hockey League (NHL) Stanley Cup Finals, but Los Angeles Kings was still the untouchable team as they downed Devils, 2-1, in overtime on Saturday, June 2, 2012, at the sold-out
Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
Fans were baffled to see their home team go down for the second straight time in a series of a lifetime with Kings now leading 2-0 and getting the home advantage for the next two.
"We're happy that we got the first two. But going home on the plane tonight, we're trying to forget about those games. We're going to learn what we did right and wrong. But going back home, it's a whole new series," Los Angeles Kings’ top defenseman, Drew
Doughty.
Martin Brodeur, New Jersey’s veteran goalie, continued to play his heart out by facing 32 shots and letting just two slip by. It is the Devils offensive power that is truly lacking now as goaltending seems to be fine but no goal scoring has kept them behind
in all aspects.
"It's unfortunate, but with a little luck on our side, we could be up 2-0," Brodeur said. "I think we have to find that positive and go into the L.A. and sneak one game as early as we can and go from there. It makes it a little harder, but we're here now."
Doughty kicked off the scoring with his third goal of the postseason in the opening minutes of the first period while Kings also killed of two straight penalties in the opener as well.
Devils luckily countered after a scoreless second period in the third with Ryan Carter nailing the equaliser and forcing an overtime extension.
Jeff Carter came out big yet against for Kings by getting the OT game-winner at 13:42, sending Los Angeles into a wild celebration as Devils’ fans and players just stood watching with a blank stare on their faces.
Devils will need to play spectacular hockey if they have any hopes of staying alive in the series as Kings and New Jersey face-off in Game 3 on Monday, June 4 at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles.
