Los Angeles Kings goalie Jonathan Quicks awarded Conn Smythe Trophy for MVP in Stanley Cup Finals
There was no doubt in anyone’s mind that Jonathan Quick would be given the title of Most Valuable Player for his performance in the 2012 National Hockey League (NHL) Stanley Cup Finals against New Jersey Devils.
It was after Game 6 that it was however made official as NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman made the announcement in front of an ecstatic Los Angeles crowd in the STAPLES Center on Monday night, June 11, 2012.
Fans roared with joy as Quick held up the trophy, which was a moment that the 26-year-old goaltender will always cherish as he continues to develop into one of the best goalies to have ever graced the sport.
"I think it's all about competing," Quick said. "You have to compete, always. That's something this organization preaches, and it makes us all feel so good to be on top now."
Jonathan Quick is also nominated for the Vezina Trophy, which will go to the best goaltender in the league, along with New York Rangers’ Henrik Lundqvist and Nashville Predators’ Pekka Rinne.
"He's unbelievable," Kings’ defenseman, Drew Doughty, said. "He's out here in the West. I think if he's in New York, where everyone is thinking Lundqvist is going to win the Vezina … If Quick is in New York, I don't think there's any doubt he's going to
win it. We lost so many games by one goal and won so many games by one goal, and that was always due to his hard work and how well he was playing."
Quick was playing against one of the most celebrated goalies of all time and three time Stanley Cup winner, Martin Brodeur, of the New Jersey Devils. Brodeur did give Quick a tough time in the past two matchups, but the younger goalie prevailed in the end,
which is definitely an achievement to be proud of.
He maintained a .946 save percentage and 1.41 goals-against average in the 2012 playoffs along with playing all 20 games to be the most regular of his players in all.
Jonathan Quick has a long way to go and this for him is just the start of it all.
