Los Angeles Kings keep home record perfect with win over the Dallas Stars
The Los Angeles Kings improved to seven wins out of seven at the Staples Center with a 3-1 victory over the Dallas Stars on Thursday 11 November.
How it happened
Dustin Brown scored his seventh of the season to put the Kings in front in the first period. Anze Kopitar had done some nice work hovering around the Stars net with the puck before firing a nice pass in
front for Brown to fire home.
The Stars tied it up a little over 10 minutes later when 21-year old Jamie Benn used his speed to get past Kings defenceman Drew Doughty and slide the puck through the legs of Jonathan Quick.
With the no scoring in the second period, it was a penalty-filled third period which opened the door for Los Angeles, who got both of their third period goals with the man advantage. Justin Williams got
the first with his seventh goal of the season at 6:51, and Jack Johnson got his first of the year just over ten minutes later. Los Angeles finished the night 2-for-8 on the power play, while the Stars failed to capitalize on all five of their power play opportunities.
What they're saying
Both teams were coming off four-day breaks, and as a result the intensity was especially high making for a particularly physical game.
"It was intense," Kings coach Terry Murray said after the game. "I thought the second and third period got revved up pretty good. For the early part of the year, as it is, the intensity was high, the compete
was high. Of course, you’ve got two division teams and that always adds a little bit to it."
The Kings got their third goal of the game after Adam Burish took a five-minute boarding penalty (for which he also received a game misconduct) for his hit on Kings defenceman Doughty.
"I wasn't trying to hurt him," Burish told reporters after the game. "I was just trying to get position. I feel terrible for putting the team in a position like that."
The Kings are on fire these days and have won seven of their last eight games – good for top spot in the Western Conference. They host the New York Islanders, losers of their last nine games, on Saturday
13 November.
The Stars lost their second game in a row and find themselves just out of the top eight in the conference. They play on back-to-back nights as they travel to Anaheim to take on the Ducks on Friday night.
