Los Angeles Kings sign veteran defender Robyn Regehr on two-year Contract – NHL news
Veteran National Hockey League (NHL) defenseman, Robyn Regehr found it difficult back in 2010-2011 to leave the Calgary Flames and move on to another team for the first time in history of being in the game, but now with the Los Angeles Kings, the 33-year-old
seems to have adjusted well.
Currently, Regehr is an integral part of the Los Angeles Kings defensive line-up and has been a major reason of them making it to the 2013 NHL Western Conference Playoff Finals against Chicago Blackhawks, which is why LA signed him on to a two-year contract
extension.
Regehr was picked up by the Los Angeles Kings on April 1 in an exchange with the Buffalo Sabres for a second-round pick in the 2014 and 2015 NHL Entry Draft. It was seen to be a good move because of the Kings suffering in the defensive department with defenseman
Willie Mitchell out for an indefinite period due to an injury.
“I think both are experienced guys,” coach Darryl Sutter said Thursday talking of Regehr and Mitchell. “Both are great locker-room guys. Both are great work- ethic guys. Both are always well-prepared for games.”
Being an enforcer for the Los Angeles Kings has been something Regehr has not had a problem doing and hopes to get his first Stanley Cup championship this time around.
“They told me they wanted me to be a good defenseman and a physical guy,” Regehr added. “Help around the penalty kill and do things like that. I had a really good understanding of the things that I needed to work on and (Kings coach) Darryl (Sutter) had
mentioned they were missing a veteran presence during the season unfortunately because of the injuries to Matt Greene and Willie Mitchell. I just tried to come in and help.”
Regehr was acquired by the Colorado Avalanche as the 19th overall back in round-one of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft and made his professional league debut in 1999-2000 with the Calgary Flames. Up until now, Robyn Regehr holds 943 games played to his name with
30 goals and 142 assists and 881 minutes in penalty time.
