Los Angeles Kings stay perfect on road, shutout Phoenix Coyotes 4-0 -NHL Playoffs Update
Looks like Los Angeles Kings are warming up for another perfect series as they shutout Phoenix Coyotes, 4-0, staying perfect on the road and taking a 2-0 lead in the 2012 National Hockey League (NHL) Stanley Cup Western Conference Playoff Finals.
Over 17,000 fans in the sold-out Jobing.com Arena in Glendale, Arizona, on Tuesday, May 15, 2012, were hoping for Coyotes to bounce back and level the series but Kings were just too determined to let anything in their way.
Jonathan Quick had another perfect night as he blocked 24 shots on his net for a second shutout of the playoffs while Mike Smith was bombarded with 40 attempts and fell short on four.
"We really want it right now," Kings’ forward, Dustin Penner, told NHL.com. "We want the first goal. We want the next goal. It's that intensity and that passion that drives us. It's that good type of fear that stops you from letting games get away from you
and continues to push you forward. We use that fear of losing to motivate us as opposed to shrinking to it."
Phoenix got physical after the frustration started building up. Shane Doan was severed a 10 and five minute game misconduct for boarding while numerous Coyotes players wanted to start a fight but Los Angeles just stayed focused on the goal. They killed all
four penalties and took advantage of two out of eight power play chances of their own.
"We didn't want to do anything after the whistle," Kings coach, Darryl Sutter, said. "We just wanted to stay away from it. We didn't have anything to prove that way."
Jeff Carter amazed the crowd as he put up three goals, a first hat trick for the Los Angeles Kings since Wayne Gretzky back in 1993 in the playoffs.
Dwight King got the first of the night at 13:15 into the first while Carter dominated round-two with a double goal period.
Carter capped off on another added man advantage 12:56 into the last period, giving Los Angeles the easy win to return home with a dominating 2-0 lead.
Game 3 will be played on Thursday, May 17, 2012, in Los Angeles, California.
