Los Angeles Kings thrash New Jersey Devils 6-1 to win first Stanley Cup -NHL Update
Los Angeles Kings made it happen as the rebounded in a huge away after losing two straight by thrashing the New Jersey Devils, 6-1, at the electrifying STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, California, in Game 6 of the 2012 National Hockey League (NHL) Stanley
Cup Finals for their first ever franchise championship.
Some players have had the experience of winning the cup while others have not, but this is a big victory for sure for the yearning city of Los Angeles that nearly got to experience it back in 1993 when Wayne Gretzky was part of the team.
"They've been waiting longer than I have, this city," Kings’ captain, Dustin Brown, said. "You dream of winning the Cup, and you know what, I'm glad I was the first King to ever lift it."
Kings were frustrated after losing two consecutive matchups to New Jersey Devils despite having them on the brink of elimination since Game 4 kicked off.
Devils got killed by their penalties in the opening round as Dustin Brown, Jeff Carter and Trevor Lewis scored three straight goals nearly four minutes apart on the added man advantages.
"It was huge," centre Anze Kopitar said, about the first period outburst. "The way the game started for us was unbelievable. [Brown] is our leader and our captain. You can't ask for more than he brought tonight."
Carter made it a 4-0 game by the opening minute of the second period while Adam Henrique was the only one to score for the New Jersey Devils side.
Third period was all dominated by Kings as well with Trevor Lewis getting his second of the historic night and Matt Greene capping off one of the most dominating runs for the Stanley Cup in NHL history.
"This is unreal. Every single emotion in me is coming out," Kopitar added. "The biggest thing has been the belief inside the locker room. We had 25 guys believing in one thing. I can't be more proud of the guys."
Martin Brodeur, veteran goalie for New Jersey Devils, fell short on five of 24 shots that ultimately cost his team big time, but the Eastern Conference’s top team is still proud of their achievements.
Next season will be another test for Los Angeles as next time, they will be going in as the defending champions.
